Former President John Dramani Mahama is in Libreville, Gabon, where he will represent Ghana at the swearing-in of President-elect General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, set for Saturday, May 3.
Mahama’s visit comes at a pivotal moment in Gabon’s political transition, following General Nguema’s emphatic victory in the April 12 presidential election. Nguema rose to prominence after leading a coup that ended the decades-long rule of Omar Bongo, and his formal inauguration marks a new chapter in the Central African country’s governance.
The presence of President Mahama at the high-profile event signals Ghana’s continued diplomatic engagement in regional stability and its support for peaceful political transitions across the continent.
Beyond symbolic diplomacy, the visit also underscores Ghana’s broader commitment to regional cooperation, with Mahama expected to use the occasion to reaffirm the importance of constitutional order and dialogue in addressing Africa’s evolving political landscape.
Accompanying Mahama on the trip are key members of his advisory and diplomatic team, including National Security Advisor Prosper Douglas Bani, Presidential Secretary Dr. Callistus Mahama, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations Stan Xoese Dogbe.
This latest international engagement adds to Mahama’s growing role in regional diplomacy, as he continues to advocate for democratic consolidation and security in West and Central Africa.
