In a symbolic move to demonstrate fiscal discipline and modest leadership, President John Dramani Mahama has barred the use of DStv and other satellite television services within Jubilee House, the seat of government.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed the policy during an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, describing it as a clear signal of the President’s personal commitment to cutting government waste.
“This decision may seem small, but it represents a broader ethos of restraint,” Kwakye Ofosu stated. “No office in Jubilee House is allowed to subscribe to satellite TV—only local channels are permitted.”
The initiative, part of the Mahama administration’s wider efforts to promote austerity in public spending, reflects what officials describe as a top-down approach to accountability—beginning with the Presidency itself.
“You might dismiss it as trivial, but when aggregated, the savings are not insignificant. It’s one of many cost-saving measures taken under President Mahama’s leadership,” he explained.
All televisions within the Presidential offices are tuned solely to local broadcasting channels, a shift intended not only to reduce costs but to also keep public officials grounded in domestic realities.
“This isn’t just about saving money; it’s about focus, discipline, and leading by example,” Kwakye Ofosu said.
He further revealed that the administration intends to replicate this policy across other government institutions in an effort to enforce consistency in prudent resource use across the public sector.
“President Mahama is setting the tone. True leadership isn’t just about policy declarations—it’s about the conduct of the people at the top,” he emphasized. “Modest governance starts with modest choices.”
The decision has sparked discussion around the symbolism of government lifestyle reforms, with some civil society voices praising the gesture as long overdue in an era of economic challenges.
As Ghana continues to navigate fiscal pressure, the administration is hoping that small symbolic shifts, like the satellite TV ban, will translate into a culture of restraint and accountability across all levels of government.
