President John Dramani Mahama has called for a shift in how Ghana approaches agriculture, urging stakeholders to treat the sector as a major engine for industrial growth, job creation, and exports rather than merely subsistence farming.
Speaking at the opening of the Ghana AgroTech Fair 2026, the President emphasized that agriculture holds the potential to transform the country’s economy if properly structured and supported with innovation and investment.
“Agriculture is not merely about cultivation; it is about productivity, value addition, industrial development, jobs, and exports,” he said, stressing that the sector must evolve to meet modern economic demands.
The event, themed “Transforming Agribusiness through Local Innovation and Technology,” brought together players across the agricultural value chain, including researchers, entrepreneurs, and investors. President Mahama noted that such platforms are essential for linking ideas to enterprise and turning innovation into viable business opportunities.
He highlighted the need to modernise every stage of the agricultural process, from production to processing, logistics, packaging, and global marketing, pointing out that expanding farmland alone would not be enough to drive growth.
“This fair reminds us that the future of agriculture lies in modernising the entire value chain—from the farm to the factory,” he stated.
The President also commended institutions such as the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Agribusiness and the Ghana Exports Imports Bank for supporting initiatives that promote agribusiness development and technological advancement in the sector.
He noted that repositioning agriculture as a business-driven sector would not only boost productivity but also create sustainable employment opportunities and enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in global markets.
