President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to accelerate the completion of critical health infrastructure projects in the Ashanti Region, with special emphasis on the stalled maternity block at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
During a meeting at Jubilee House on June 2 with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and a delegation of Ashanti chiefs, Mahama highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing longstanding delays that have hampered healthcare delivery in the region.
The new five-storey maternity facility, initiated in February 2021 following the demolition of the old block, is designed to be a state-of-the-art centre offering specialised services in paediatric neurology, haematology, cardiology, respiratory care, and infectious diseases. It also features dedicated units for maternal and newborn care, including a Paediatric Renal Unit and a Mother and Baby Unit.
President Mahama’s promise extends beyond KATH, as he reaffirmed his administration’s intention to push forward the completion of the Sewua and Afari Military Hospitals—projects that have encountered setbacks in recent years.
“The Ashanti Region is central to our ‘Big Push’ infrastructure agenda, and we are determined to deliver these vital health facilities to improve access and quality of care,” Mahama said.
This renewed focus on health infrastructure aims to strengthen the region’s healthcare system and enhance services for mothers, children, and military personnel alike, addressing critical gaps that have persisted over the past decade.
