As the maritime industry continues to shape global trade and economic growth, a major educational event in Ghana is set to introduce young people to the numerous career opportunities within this vital sector.
The upcoming Educational and Career Fair, organized by the Regional Maritime University (RMU), aims to guide the next generation of leaders towards fulfilling careers that can contribute to both personal and national economic development.
Scheduled for April 8-9, 2025, the two-day event, themed “Guiding Tomorrow’s Leaders to Career Choices in the Maritime Industry,” will feature a series of interactive sessions, networking opportunities, and keynote addresses designed to inspire and educate attendees.
Dr. Eric Duncan, the Chairperson for the fair, emphasized the importance of exposing young people to maritime careers as a way of supporting the growth of the economy.
“The maritime industry plays a critical role in facilitating international trade, responsible for transporting over 80% of global goods. By engaging youth in this sector, we are not only empowering them but also helping to build the national economy,” Dr. Duncan said.
“This fair offers a unique platform to showcase the career pathways available to young people and guide them toward making informed decisions about their futures.”
The fair is expected to provide a space for productive exchanges among students, faculty, maritime professionals, industry partners, and other stakeholders. Dr. Duncan explained that the event would feature a variety of discussions on maritime education, environmental challenges, and the industry’s role in driving innovation.
Keynote speaker Mrs. Magdalene Ofori-Addai, a renowned maritime administrator, will address the fair’s theme and share her expertise on the evolving maritime landscape. Other distinguished speakers, including Madam Ogbugo, a Climate Champion, and Mr. Richmond Kennedy Quarcoo, the Executive Director of Plastic Punch, will explore environmental sustainability and pollution mitigation strategies in maritime settings.
In addition to the educational sessions, the event will highlight RMU’s innovative projects, including a presentation on the university’s Solar Farm project, led by Dr. Isaac Owusu-Nyarko.
The RMU Vocational Skills Training Center will also showcase its programs designed to equip students with the practical, industry-relevant skills necessary to excel in the maritime field.
With over 100 participants expected, including students, maritime companies, and professionals from both Ghana and beyond, the fair promises to be a dynamic hub for learning, networking, and career development. Dr. Duncan called on corporate entities and educational institutions to participate, helping to expose the next generation to the vast potential within the maritime sector.
Mrs. Ofori-Addai expressed her excitement about the fair, highlighting its potential to introduce young people, especially girls, to the diverse opportunities available in maritime careers. “This event is not just about introducing young people to careers; it’s about opening doors to a future filled with possibilities,” she said.
The fair will also celebrate the achievements of individuals who have made significant contributions to the growth of RMU and the maritime industry, honoring their dedication and accomplishments.
As the maritime industry continues to expand, events like this Educational and Career Fair are essential for preparing young people to play a key role in the sector’s future. By providing access to information, mentorship, and industry connections, the fair will help to nurture the next generation of maritime professionals in Ghana and across the African continent.
