Markets Await Interest Rate Signal as Bank of Ghana Opens 129th MPC Meeting

Investors and businesses are turning their attention to the Bank of Ghana as its **129th Monetary Policy Committee meeting** begins today, with expectations mounting over whether the central bank will ease interest rates amid sharply falling inflation.

The three-day meeting, which runs from **March 16 to March 18**, will evaluate recent economic developments before policymakers announce their decision on the policy rate at a press conference on Wednesday.

### Pressure builds for rate cut

Financial markets are increasingly anticipating a potential **monetary policy easing** following a steep drop in inflation.

According to new figures from the Ghana Statistical Service, Ghana’s year-on-year inflation fell to **3.3% in February 2026**, down from **3.8% in January** and dramatically lower than the **23.1% recorded in February 2025**.

The latest data marks the **14th consecutive month of declining inflation** and represents the **lowest level since 2021**, strengthening the argument for lower borrowing costs to support economic growth.

Businesses and financial analysts say a reduction in the policy rate could ease credit conditions for companies and households while helping to stimulate investment.

### Global tensions cloud outlook

However, the central bank’s decision may not be straightforward.

Rising geopolitical tensions involving the **United States**, **Israel**, and **Iran** have created uncertainty in global energy markets, increasing the risk of higher oil prices and commodity volatility.

For an import-dependent economy such as Ghana, any sharp rise in global fuel prices could quickly translate into higher transport and energy costs domestically.

Economists warn that such developments could also pressure the Ghanaian cedi and increase the cost of imports, potentially reversing some of the recent progress made in bringing inflation down.

### Delicate policy balancing act

The Monetary Policy Committee is therefore expected to weigh the **benefits of stimulating economic activity** against the **risk of renewed inflationary pressures from global shocks**.

While lower interest rates could boost growth, policymakers may choose a cautious approach if external risks threaten price stability.

### Investors await policy direction

The outcome of the meeting will provide a key signal to markets about the central bank’s confidence in Ghana’s economic recovery.

Investors, businesses, and financial institutions will closely analyse the committee’s decision and accompanying commentary for guidance on the future direction of monetary policy.

With inflation nearing historically low levels, the central bank’s next move could shape **borrowing costs, investment decisions, and economic momentum** in the months ahead.
