Ghanaian clubs Medeama Sporting Club and Nations FC have learned the paths they must navigate in the preliminary rounds of the 2026/27 CAF inter-club competitions, with both sides facing important tests in their bid to progress on the continental stage.
Medeama, Ghana’s representative in the CAF Champions League, have drawn DR Congo powerhouse TP Mazembe, one of the most successful clubs in African football. The two-legged tie is expected to be one of the standout fixtures of the preliminary round.
The Tarkwa-based side will be aiming to overcome the experienced Congolese giants and advance to the next stage, where the winner will meet either Club Africain of Tunisia or Djoliba AC of Mali.
For Nations FC, the draw marks the beginning of a historic chapter as they prepare for their first-ever CAF Confederation Cup campaign. The MTN FA Cup holders have been paired with FC Diarra of Mali in the preliminary round.
Despite their recent relegation to the Division One League, the Abrankese-based club now has the opportunity to make an impact in continental football and build momentum from their domestic cup success.
Victory over FC Diarra would see Nations FC progress to a second preliminary-round clash against the winner of the tie between AS Zam of Niger and ASKO de Kara of Togo.
The draw gives both Ghanaian clubs a chance to strengthen the country’s presence in African club football, although Medeama’s encounter with TP Mazembe is widely viewed as the more challenging assignment.
CAF is expected to announce the official dates and venues for the preliminary-round matches in the coming days.
