Health Expert Warns of Snoring’s Impact on Well-Being and Relationships
Dr. Martin Adu Afram, a physician assistant at Amphred Hospital in Nkoranza, Bono East Region, has cautioned that snoring—often dismissed as a minor sleep issue—can have serious consequences on both personal health and relationships.
Speaking on Fabea FM’s “Me Man Ho Dadwen” with Apiah-Kubi, Dr. Afram explained that snoring occurs when airflow is obstructed in the respiratory tract, preventing smooth breathing during sleep.
Causes and Effects of Snoring
According to Dr. Afram, several factors contribute to snoring, including:
- Nasal or throat congestion (cattarrh)
- Overeating before bed
- Obesity
- Excessive alcohol intake
- Poor sleeping posture
Beyond being a personal health concern, snoring also affects partners and family members who share sleeping spaces. He warned that the disruptive noise can lead to fatigue, irritability, and sleep deprivation for both the snorer and those around them.
Managing and Reducing Snoring
To help individuals reduce or manage snoring, Dr. Afram recommended the following lifestyle changes:
✔ Avoid alcohol before bedtime
✔ Maintain a healthy weight through regular exercise
✔ Sleep on your side instead of lying on your back
✔ Avoid eating large meals before sleeping
Additionally, he encouraged individuals who snore frequently to seek medical attention for professional guidance on managing the condition.
Prioritizing Sleep Health
Dr. Afram emphasized that snoring is a manageable condition that should not be ignored. With greater awareness, lifestyle adjustments, and medical support, individuals can improve their sleep quality and overall health.
As medical research continues to highlight the impact of sleep disorders, he urged Ghanaians to prioritize sleep health and seek help when necessary.
