The Melcom Group of Companies has reinforced its commitment to healthcare support in Ghana with the donation of 25 medical refrigerators valued at US $125,000 to hospitals across the country — the latest in a series of interventions that have spanned more than a decade.
Since 2013, the retail giant has distributed 70 such refrigerators to health facilities nationwide through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, aimed at improving the preservation of medicines, vaccines, and blood. This year’s beneficiaries include the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, 37 Military Hospital, Tema General Hospital, Ho Teaching Hospital, and Manhyia District Hospital, among others.
Melcom’s Managing Director, Mr Ramesh Sadhwani, described the donation as a continuation of the company’s health-focused CSR agenda, which has also supported national blood drives resulting in roughly 12,000 pints collected over the past decade.
“A healthy population is the bedrock of a strong economy and a thriving business environment,” he noted, adding that the refrigerators will help ensure blood and vaccines are stored at optimal temperatures to save lives.
General Manager, Mr Francis Sam, emphasised that the company’s CSR efforts remain rooted in health and education. “Access to quality healthcare is essential. Through our endowment fund, we’ve been able to make tangible contributions to medical infrastructure since 2013, and we intend to keep going,” he said.
On behalf of the beneficiary institutions, Madam Gloria Bentum of the Ga East Municipal Hospital lauded the initiative as “an investment in life-saving capacity,” expressing hope that the gesture would inspire more private sector players to support the health sector.
Melcom’s donation comes at a time when many health facilities face critical shortages of cold-chain equipment, making the intervention both timely and impactful.
