Ghana’s digital financial sector continues to show remarkable momentum, with mobile money transactions hitting a historic high of GHC 365 billion in April 2025, according to the Bank of Ghana’s latest economic and financial summary.
This marks a 3.8% increase over the GHC 351.7 billion recorded in March, and represents the strongest monthly performance for the year so far—signalling robust growth in digital payments across the country.
Alongside the surge in transaction value, mobile money usage also spiked in volume. The number of transactions rose from 764 million in March to 778 million in April, reflecting growing consumer and business trust in mobile-based financial services.
Experts say the sustained growth is being powered by increased smartphone adoption, expanded agent networks, and enhanced digital literacy. These factors, combined with supportive regulation, are helping cement mobile money as a central pillar of Ghana’s digital economy.
“As mobile penetration deepens and fintech services diversify, we anticipate continued upward trends in mobile transaction volumes and values,” said one financial analyst.
The data underscores mobile money’s expanding role in driving financial inclusion and modernizing everyday commerce in both urban and rural settings. Analysts believe the sector will be crucial to Ghana’s broader push toward a cash-lite economy.
