The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Agona West Municipality has heightened flood preparedness measures by placing several communities along River Akora on alert following concerns over rising water levels and the potential for flooding.
Residents living in low-lying and flood-prone sections of Agona Swedru, Nyakrom, and Nkranful have been advised to take precautionary measures and be ready to move to safer locations if conditions worsen.
The warning was issued by the Agona West Municipal Director of NADMO, Mr. Charles Agbavitor, after an assessment of River Akora’s water levels revealed the need for increased vigilance among communities located along the river basin.
According to Mr. Agbavitor, residents should closely monitor weather developments and remain prepared for any sudden changes that could increase the risk of flooding.
He stressed that although no major flooding had been reported, early preparedness was critical to preventing loss of life and minimizing damage to property should water levels rise unexpectedly.
As part of the municipality’s emergency preparedness strategy, NADMO officials have been placed on standby to provide regular updates and issue timely warnings to affected communities whenever necessary.
Mr. Agbavitor particularly urged residents occupying designated flood buffer zones to comply strictly with all safety directives and evacuation notices that may be issued by authorities.
He recalled the devastating floods that struck parts of Agona Swedru and surrounding communities in 2010, prompting National Security to establish protective buffer zones in vulnerable areas. The affected locations included Agona Swedru, Nyakrom, Swedru Sabon Zongo, and Swedru Salem.
The Municipal Director emphasized that adherence to established flood management measures remains essential in reducing disaster risks and protecting communities situated near the river.
He further encouraged residents to cooperate fully with emergency response agencies and avoid activities that could increase their exposure to flood hazards.
The alert forms part of NADMO’s broader efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and ensure that communities along River Akora remain informed and protected throughout the rainy season.
Authorities say proactive action by residents, combined with continuous monitoring by emergency agencies, will be crucial in preventing a repeat of past flood disasters in the municipality.
