The Volta Regional Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has intensified flood preparedness measures across five flood-prone districts as heavy rains continue to raise concerns over possible flooding in the region.
The move forms part of a comprehensive response strategy aimed at preventing loss of life and minimising damage to property during the peak of the rainy season.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Volta Regional Director of NADMO, Mr Pascal Agbagbah, said while the recent heavy rains had little impact on the Hohoe enclave, communities downstream experienced flooding due to rising water levels.
He identified the three Tongu districts, Keta and Anloga as the areas most vulnerable to flooding, noting that emergency preparedness efforts had been heightened in those districts.
According to Mr Agbagbah, NADMO has developed and activated a detailed flood response plan that outlines available resources, deployment strategies and emergency response procedures to ensure prompt action whenever flooding occurs.
He explained that relief items had already been pre-positioned, while collaboration with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, the Ghana Police Service and other emergency agencies had been strengthened to facilitate rapid rescue and relief operations.
The Regional Director said public education campaigns had also been intensified to encourage residents in flood-prone communities to remain alert, heed early warning messages and cooperate with evacuation directives when necessary.
As part of preventive interventions, he disclosed that the Ho Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Stephen Adom, had been tasked to oversee the dredging of drains around the Dornorkodzi area to improve stormwater flow and reduce the likelihood of flooding.
Mr Agbagbah urged residents to support disaster prevention efforts by avoiding construction on waterways, refraining from dumping refuse into drains and complying with safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.
He reaffirmed NADMO’s commitment to working with stakeholders across the region to safeguard lives and property throughout the rainy season.
