Students have been encouraged to take up leadership roles in promoting integrity, accountability and democratic values within their schools and communities.
The call was made by the Awutu-Senya East Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Madam Mary Nyamekye Ankrah, during the election and swearing-in ceremony of new executives of the Civic Education Club at Kumbe Islamic Basic School ‘A’ in Kasoa.
She said Civic Education Clubs form part of the NCCE’s strategy to nurture responsible young citizens who understand Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and actively contribute to the fight against corruption and indiscipline in society.
Madam Ankrah urged students to act as civic ambassadors by embracing national values, promoting social cohesion and speaking out against corrupt practices in their communities.
She stressed that building an informed and vigilant citizenry was key to strengthening Ghana’s democracy, noting that “when citizens are well-informed and alert, leaders are more accountable in their service to the people.”
The newly sworn-in executives include Ms Emmanuella Tawiah as President, Master Chris Opare Elsilfie as Vice President, Ms Annabel Akosuah Boamah as Secretary, and Master Tawakaltu Addol as Assistant Secretary. Others are Master James Adom Brempong (Organiser), Benedicta Benson (Assistant Organiser), Claudia Kwartemaa Wiafe (Treasurer), Mercy Quaicoe (Spokesperson), and Justina Ahiadu (Assistant Spokesperson).
The ceremony, organised by the NCCE with support from club patrons, also featured guidance on election procedures to help students understand democratic processes such as voting.
A patron of the club, Mr Sir Timothy, advised the students on proper electoral conduct and pledged continued support for the club’s activities, urging the new executives to uphold its rules and values.
Outgoing president Mr Samuel Amponsah congratulated the new leadership and expressed confidence in their ability to advance the club’s work.
The new president, Mr Tawiah, thanked members for their trust and pledged to lead with integrity, inclusiveness and dedication.
