Accra — In a significant step towards policing reform, President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, officially inaugurated an 11-member Police Council charged with strengthening oversight of the Ghana Police Service.
The swearing-in ceremony, held at Jubilee House, marked the installation of a diverse council led by Vice President Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. The body comprises senior government officials, police representatives from various ranks, and presidential appointees, reflecting a broad-based approach to policing governance.
Taking oaths of office and secrecy, the members received their instruments of appointment directly from the President before posing for an official group photograph.
The Police Council’s formation underscores the administration’s commitment to rebuilding public confidence in law enforcement by focusing on key issues such as promotions, transfers, discipline, and the welfare of officers.
President Mahama urged the Council to prioritise professionalism and transparency, emphasizing that “rebuilding trust between the Police Service and the public is vital for national security and democratic governance.”
He further highlighted the need to modernize policing systems to effectively address contemporary security challenges.
With this new Council, the government aims to create a more accountable and community-focused police service, addressing past grievances and setting a fresh course for justice and equity.
