The National Identification Authority (NIA) has terminated the appointments of seven members of its registration team at Galaka in the Upper East Region for allegedly failing to report extortion involving the free Ghana Card registration exercise for children.
The Authority has also confirmed the arrest of six other staff members accused of demanding unauthorised payments from parents seeking to register their children aged between six and 14.
According to the NIA, the six suspects were arrested by the Bawku West District Police after some parents identified them as personnel who allegedly demanded money before providing registration services.
The suspects are currently assisting the police with investigations.
In a press release dated October 29, 2026, the Authority said the decision to terminate the appointments of the seven other staff members followed an internal review of the alleged misconduct.
The seven were accused of being aware of the extortion but failing to report the incidents to the appropriate authorities.
The statement, signed by the Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, said the measures formed part of efforts to enforce discipline and protect the integrity of the Ghana Card registration process.
The NIA reiterated that registration for the Ghana Card must follow approved procedures and stressed that no staff member has the authority to demand unauthorised payments from applicants or their parents.
It warned that allegations of misconduct would be treated seriously and that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against personnel found culpable.
The Authority also urged members of the public to report suspected extortion and other forms of misconduct through its official channels to ensure that registration services are delivered fairly and professionally.
