New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has tasked the party’s newly elected Greater Accra Regional executives to use their mandate to rebuild the party’s structures and position it for a strong comeback in the 2028 general elections.
Dr Bawumia said the party’s ongoing reorganisation was laying the foundation for its return to political power after losing the 2024 elections to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He made the call on Sunday, August 16, when he met the newly elected Greater Accra Regional executives following the regional elections held on August 15.
According to him, the regional polls marked another important stage in a comprehensive restructuring exercise that began at the grassroots level and is expected to conclude with the party’s national executive elections on October 10.
He said the completion of the reorganisation would give the NPP the organisational strength and unity needed to mount an effective campaign for the 2028 elections.
“The goal for all of us is to win the 2028 election. This is just a stepping stone towards winning 2028,” Dr Bawumia said.
He noted that the party had already conducted elections at the polling station, electoral area and constituency levels before moving to the regional level.
Dr Bawumia therefore urged the new executives not to treat their election as the culmination of their responsibilities but as the beginning of a demanding assignment to strengthen the party.
“There is a lot of work ahead of us,” he stressed, charging the executives to commit themselves to rebuilding the party at all levels.
He said the focus must now shift from internal contests to consolidating the party’s structures, strengthening grassroots engagement and preparing members for the political battle ahead.
The former Vice President also emphasised that the new executives had been entrusted with a responsibility that went beyond their individual political ambitions, as their performance would be critical to the NPP’s efforts to regain power in 2028.
With the national elections scheduled for October 10, Dr Bawumia said the party was expected to emerge from the reorganisation process with a stronger organisational vehicle capable of driving its campaign towards the 2028 polls.
