Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG) has taken a significant step in raising awareness about nuclear energy by organizing a virtual workshop aimed at educating media professionals on the potential of nuclear power to transform Ghana’s energy sector.
The session, held today, brought together experts and journalists from across the country to discuss how nuclear technology could provide a sustainable and reliable energy source for Ghana. The workshop featured presentations from renowned energy experts, Mr. Daniel Wordson and Dr. Felix Ameyaw, who provided detailed insights into the technical aspects and benefits of nuclear power.
Mr. Wordson explained the fundamental workings of a nuclear power plant, emphasizing how the reactor core generates heat energy, which is then converted into electricity through a steam generation system. He elaborated on the importance of a robust cooling system to regulate reactor temperatures and ensure safe and efficient operation.
Dr. Ameyaw focused on the environmental and economic advantages of nuclear energy, highlighting its role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing a stable, large-scale power supply. “A single nuclear power plant can prevent the emission of up to 2.4 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, making it a clean alternative to fossil fuels,” he noted.
The experts also pointed out the reliability of nuclear power, with an average capacity factor of 92%, significantly higher than solar and wind energy sources. They cited examples like South Africa’s Koeberg nuclear power plant, which has consistently powered over two million homes for more than three decades.
Following the presentations, media professionals engaged in a dynamic Q&A session, seeking clarity on Ghana’s nuclear power ambitions and the measures in place to ensure safety.
Dr. Stephen Yamoah, Executive Director of NPG, expressed optimism about nuclear energy’s future in Ghana, stating, “Educating the public through the media is a crucial part of our mission. This workshop is a step towards demystifying nuclear energy and highlighting its role in Ghana’s economic development.”
As Ghana continues to seek sustainable energy solutions, the NPG workshop has equipped journalists with the knowledge needed to inform and engage the public on the role of nuclear power in the country’s future.
