NUGS Suspends Protest as WAEC Commits to Releasing Withheld WASSCE Results

In a dramatic turn of events, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has suspended its much-anticipated demonstration against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) following assurances that withheld results from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will be released soon.

The protest, initially set for Tuesday, February 25, was aimed at pressuring WAEC to address the grievances of affected students whose results had either been withheld or canceled over alleged examination malpractice. With many students depending on these results for university admissions, the delay had sparked widespread concern among students, parents, and educational stakeholders.

However, just hours before the planned demonstration, NUGS took to its social media platforms to announce a suspension of the protest. The decision followed an emergency meeting between NUGS representatives, WAEC officials, and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

According to the statement released by NUGS, WAEC provided firm assurances that all pending withheld results would be released by March 1, 2025. The statement read, “Following an emergency meeting with West African Examinations Council (WAEC) officials and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, NUGS has suspended the planned demonstration scheduled for February 25, 2025. WAEC has given firm assurances that all pending withheld results will be released by the 1st of March 2025.”

This announcement has provided a glimmer of hope to thousands of affected students and their families, who have been anxiously awaiting clarity on their academic future. Many had expressed frustration over the uncertainty, with some accusing WAEC of mishandling examination malpractice cases and unfairly punishing students without sufficient transparency.

The controversy surrounding the 2024 WASSCE results began when WAEC withheld and canceled the results of several students due to alleged cheating. This move led to outrage and heightened tensions within the education sector, as students and parents demanded answers and immediate resolutions.

NUGS, known for its role in championing students’ rights, had initially taken a firm stance, calling for the immediate release of results or a clear explanation from WAEC regarding the withheld results. The union emphasized that the delay was jeopardizing the educational aspirations of students, many of whom required their results for university admissions and scholarship opportunities.

While the suspension of the protest has eased immediate tensions, students and their families remain cautiously optimistic. Many will be closely monitoring WAEC’s commitment to ensuring that the results are indeed released as promised. For now, the fate of these students hinges on whether WAEC fulfills its latest pledge by the March 1 deadline.
