The arrest and subsequent bail of two New Patriotic Party (NPP) officials have sparked political controversy, with party leaders accusing the government of targeting opposition figures.
Kwame Baffoe, Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, and Abubakar Yakubu, the party’s Sunyani East Communication Officer, were granted bail by the Ghana Police Service after being picked up by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Abronye DC was reportedly arrested over alleged threats against a judge at the Adenta Circuit Court, while Baba Amando was detained for alleged false publication.
Following their release in Accra, opposition leaders criticised the arrests, describing them as politically motivated. Alexander Afenyo-Markin called on the police to act with restraint and professionalism in handling such matters.
Echoing similar sentiments, Henry Nana Boakye argued that the arrests were an attempt to shift public attention from governance challenges facing the administration.
He claimed the government was under pressure over unmet commitments, including job creation, economic reforms, and key legislative promises, and was therefore resorting to actions that could be perceived as harassment of opposition members.
The development has intensified political tensions, with debates emerging over law enforcement neutrality and the broader climate for political expression in the country.
