The Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism has conducted a working visit to Sunda Ghana Limited as part of its ongoing efforts to monitor and support the country’s industrial sector. The visit was aimed at gaining an in-depth understanding of the challenges facing local manufacturers and to explore ways the government can provide meaningful support to strengthen the sector.
During the visit, Mr. Wei Yea, Managing Director of Sunda Ghana Limited, highlighted the company’s significant contributions to the Ghanaian economy and its commitment to high-quality local production. He expressed concerns over the growing threat of smuggling, particularly the importation of substandard diapers, which have severely impacted the company’s operations. Due to the influx of these low-quality imports, Sunda Ghana was forced to shut down two production lines, resulting in the loss of around 350 jobs.
Mr. Wei urged the committee to take immediate action to curb illegal trade practices, emphasizing the need for robust policy measures to protect local industries from unfair competition.
In response, Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Alexander Roosevelt Hottordzie, acknowledged Sunda Ghana’s contributions to job creation and industrial development. He praised the company’s transparency and reaffirmed the committee’s support for enhancing local industries.
Mr. Hottordzie further stressed the importance of protecting local businesses, noting that supporting companies like Sunda Ghana aligns with President Akufo-Addo’s 24-hour economy policy, which aims to boost productivity and foster sustainable economic growth. He also mentioned that the Majority Leader, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, had tasked parliamentary committees with gathering data during the recess to inform the President’s decisions as he works to reset the country’s economic strategy.
The committee assured Sunda Ghana that they would engage relevant authorities to address the challenges posed by smuggling and create a more conducive environment for local businesses to flourish.
