An atmosphere of uncertainty and rising tension has gripped parts of Kumasi following a dramatic security operation at the residence of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
A combined team of National Security operatives and Police officers stormed the property earlier today, deploying heavily armed personnel around the premises. The reasons for the operation remain undisclosed, fueling speculation and concern among residents and party supporters.
As of the latest reports, it is unclear whether Chairman Wontumi is inside the house or has been detained. However, the sheer scale and coordination of the operation have raised eyebrows, especially given Wontumi’s prominent role within the NPP’s regional and national structures.
Channel One TV’s reporter Hafiz Tijani, who is on the ground, described a scene of heightened alert, with a strong security cordon in place and curious onlookers gathering nearby.
The development is likely to intensify political tensions in the region, with NPP loyalists already expressing outrage over what some describe as targeted harassment of party figures.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the purpose of the raid or its legal basis.
More details to follow as the situation unfolds.
