The Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council has firmly distanced itself from the purported installation of Opanyin Kwesi Gyan—also known as Frank Asiedu—as the chief of Agona Abodom, describing him as an “imposter” and warning of dire consequences for those who recognize his claim.
In a press conference held in Agona Nyakrom, the Council, led by Krontihene Nana Kojo Amoakwa V, denounced the self-styled chief, who is allegedly parading under the stool name Nana Osam Dadzie Obrempong XI. The Council says the installation was carried out without the consent of the Omanhene, Okofo Katakyi Nyakoh Eku X, whose approval is constitutionally and customarily required in all enstoolments under his jurisdiction.
Nana Amoakwa, also chief of Agona Duakwa, made it clear that Opanyin Gyan’s actions violate the traditions of the area and risk plunging the town into unrest. “This man is not and has never been a chief. He is an imposter and his actions are unlawful and disrespectful to the chieftaincy institution,” he declared.
To prevent a possible outbreak of violence and to maintain peace, the Omanhene has suspended the celebration of the 2025 Akwambo Festival in Agona Abodom, originally scheduled for August. The decision is a precautionary measure aimed at averting any clash between supporters of the rival factions.
The Council cited a controversial ceremony on June 28, 2025, during which Opanyin Gyan was carried in a palanquin in what appeared to be an enstoolment rite. The Council maintains the event was illegal and not sanctioned by any legitimate authority.
The Omanhene’s office also revealed receiving correspondence from members of the Asona family—who are traditionally involved in selecting chiefs—expressing their intention to sever ties with the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area. The Traditional Council says it is reviewing the situation and will respond appropriately, warning that any other chiefs who support the breakaway move risk sanctions.
“We advise all government bodies, private entities, and the public not to recognize or transact business with this self-proclaimed chief. Any institution that does so does so at its own risk,” Nana Amoakwa warned.
Also present at the press conference were key figures from the Traditional Council, including Nana Dr. Ampem Darko V, Kyidomhene of Agona Nyakrom, and Kweku Esieni V, Regent of Agona Swedru.
The Council assured that a legitimate process will be followed to install a qualified and recognized chief for Agona Abodom in due time, reaffirming its commitment to upholding the integrity of customary law and the sanctity of traditional leadership.
