As former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey prepares for a fresh chapter in his football career with a reported move to Spanish side Villarreal, the Ghanaian international is also facing serious legal challenges in the UK.
The 32-year-old appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, charged with five counts of rape involving two women and one count of sexual assault involving a third woman. The alleged incidents are said to have occurred between 2021 and 2022, during Partey’s time at Arsenal.
The court appearance came just four days after his contract with the Premier League club expired at the end of June. Partey, dressed in a black jumper and trousers, spoke only to confirm his name and acknowledge his bail conditions, which prohibit him from contacting the alleged victims and require him to notify police of any change of address or overseas travel.
His next scheduled court appearance is at the Old Bailey on 2 September.
The charges stem from a long-running investigation by London’s Metropolitan Police, which began in February 2022 following an initial report of rape. The Crown Prosecution Service formally brought the charges last week.
Partey’s legal team has maintained his innocence. Jenny Wiltshire, his solicitor, said in a previous statement that her client “denies all the charges against him” and looks forward to “the opportunity to finally clear his name.”
Meanwhile, sources close to the footballer indicate that he is in the final stages of securing a one-year deal with Villarreal, with the option to extend for another 12 months — a move that marks his return to La Liga, where he previously starred for Atlético Madrid.
As the high-profile case unfolds, it casts a shadow over the midfielder’s transition from the Premier League to Spanish football. The outcome of the trial could have significant implications for his career and public image, both in the UK and abroad.
