England head coach Thomas Tuchel has made his first major squad decisions ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Albania at Wembley, leaving out Morgan Gibbs-White, Jarell Quansah, and Aaron Ramsdale from his matchday selection.
With UEFA regulations limiting matchday squads to 23 players, Tuchel—who originally named a 26-man squad for the fixtures against Albania and Latvia—had to make tough calls on who to exclude.
Gibbs-White, the Nottingham Forest midfielder, was initially left out of Tuchel’s original squad but was later drafted in as a replacement for the injured Cole Palmer. Despite his late inclusion, he has not made the final cut for the Albania game.
Joining him on the sidelines is Liverpool defender Quansah and Southampton goalkeeper Ramsdale, who will also miss out on Tuchel’s debut in charge.
Despite the omissions, England will field a strong lineup, with Harry Kane set to captain the team. Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice are expected to start in midfield, while Phil Foden, Morgan Rogers, and Anthony Gordon are competing for spots alongside Kane in attack.
One of the biggest tactical questions surrounding Tuchel’s England reign is his defensive setup. Known for preferring a back three—most notably during his Champions League-winning spell with Chelsea—Tuchel has reportedly focused training sessions on a back four throughout the week.
This suggests a potential shift in England’s approach, with Friday’s game set to offer the first real glimpse into Tuchel’s tactical blueprint.
As England steps into a new era under Tuchel, all eyes will be on how his team lines up and performs in his first competitive test at Wembley.
