The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of a first-year student who allegedly took his own life after a personal incident involving his partner.
The student reportedly died by suicide on Wednesday, April 16, shortly after witnessing a distressing situation involving his girlfriend at GUSSS Hall Two, a residence on campus. Eyewitnesses say the emotional shock caused him to collapse on the spot before later taking the drastic step.
The incident has prompted renewed calls for enhanced mental health support systems within tertiary institutions, with many students expressing shock and sadness over the development.
Authorities at UEW and the Winneba Police have commenced investigations into the matter, while the student community has been urged to prioritize emotional well-being and seek help when overwhelmed.
The body of the deceased has been taken into police custody for further examination as investigations continue.
