The Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) have expressed deep concern over the April 22, 2025 suspension of Ghana’s Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
In a joint statement, the two legal bodies said the move raises troubling questions about judicial independence and the rule of law in Ghana.
They urged Ghanaian authorities to ensure that any actions taken against the Chief Justice strictly adhere to constitutional provisions and internationally accepted standards of due process.
The organisations noted that the suspension of a sitting Chief Justice is an extraordinary measure that should only occur under clear, transparent, and lawful circumstances, free from political influence.
They further called on the Ghanaian government to guarantee that the judiciary remains insulated from any form of intimidation or interference.
The statement emphasised that the integrity of the judiciary is essential to maintaining public confidence in democratic governance and upholding the separation of powers.
