The University of Ghana’s Health Services Directorate has reintroduced strict COVID-19 preventive protocols following the detection of new suspected and confirmed cases in and around the campus.
In a public notice issued on June 23, the Directorate urged the entire university community—including staff, students, and visitors—to remain alert and immediately adhere to enhanced health safety measures.
The alert signals a cautious return to familiar pandemic-era routines, as Ghana’s premier university seeks to contain the resurgence and avoid a potential full-blown outbreak on campus.
Preventive Measures Reinforced
The university’s health authorities are strongly advising the community to follow these key preventive guidelines:
- Proper use of face masks, especially in indoor or congested environments.
- Regular hand hygiene using soap and water or alcohol-based sanitizers.
- Observance of physical distancing (at least one metre) where feasible.
- Avoidance of large gatherings unless critically necessary.
- Proper ventilation in academic and administrative spaces.
- Immediate medical attention and self-isolation for anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms.
Heightened Monitoring and Response
The Health Services Directorate has also reactivated its COVID-19 Response Protocols, which include screening procedures at the university’s health facilities. The directorate said it is actively monitoring developments and will issue regular updates as the situation evolves.
This proactive move, officials say, is intended to pre-empt the spread of the virus and protect lives while ensuring academic and administrative continuity on campus.
Community Urged to Cooperate
With several cases already confirmed and others under investigation, university officials are appealing to all members of the university community to act responsibly and support the renewed containment efforts.
“We must act together to safeguard our health and the academic calendar,” the statement read.
The university’s decision reflects growing concerns about a broader national or global trend of COVID-19 reemergence, with health experts globally warning that complacency could lead to another health crisis.
Members of the public are encouraged to report symptoms early and comply fully with the reinstated safety protocols to help prevent another wave of infections.
