Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has challenged his teammates to respond to last season’s disappointing campaign as the club prepares for a new era under head coach Andoni Iraola.
The Reds finished fifth in the Premier League with 60 points last season, missing out on the title but still securing Champions League qualification.
Van Dijk described the campaign as “unacceptable” but believes Liverpool have the opportunity to rebuild their momentum and compete strongly under Iraola.
“We all know how tough it will be, but if you aren’t up for the challenge then you aren’t at the right place,” Van Dijk said.
“What I feel at the moment is everybody is up for the challenge.”
The 35-year-old defender said the squad was not motivated by the need to silence critics, but by the responsibility that comes with representing Liverpool.
“I don’t feel we have a point to prove to anyone. We just have to show how much we care, how much we want to fight for this badge and also realise how privileged we are to be playing for Liverpool,” he said.
### New-look Liverpool targeting stronger campaign
Liverpool have strengthened their defensive options ahead of the new season, with Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo joining the squad, while Giovanni Leoni is nearing a return from an ACL injury.
Van Dijk also expects Iraola to bring a different tactical approach after the Spaniard earned praise for his attacking style during his time at Bournemouth.
“If you look at Bournemouth last season, they were pretty exciting,” Van Dijk said.
He believes Liverpool can challenge on all fronts if the squad remains healthy and continues to adapt to the new manager’s methods.
“We need everyone to be fit. We need a squad that is able to compete on all four fronts, that’s the only way to try to be successful,” he added.
With the transfer window still open, Van Dijk said Liverpool could make further additions before turning their full attention to the new campaign.
“Let’s see what the last couple weeks of the transfer window brings and then let’s go for it,” he said.
