The fate of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, will come before the Accra High Court on November 4, 2026, when it delivers its ruling on his application for bail pending appeal against his 20-year prison sentence.
The ruling will determine whether Mr Boasiako remains in custody while challenging his conviction for illegal mining-related offences linked to a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
His lawyers are seeking his temporary release pending the determination of the appeal, while the Attorney-General has opposed the application on grounds that the former NPP regional chairman poses a flight risk.
The court’s decision will therefore be a key development in the legal proceedings against the politician, who is challenging both his conviction and the lengthy custodial sentence imposed on him.
The bail application was initially scheduled for hearing on August 19, but proceedings were adjourned after Mr Boasiako and his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, failed to appear in court.
The matter was subsequently rescheduled, with the court now expected to deliver its decision on November 4.
The prosecution’s opposition to bail centres on concerns about the possibility of Mr Boasiako absconding if released while his appeal remains pending.
His legal team, meanwhile, is seeking his release as the appellate process proceeds.
The court must determine whether the circumstances of the case justify granting bail before the appeal is decided.
Until the ruling is delivered, Mr Boasiako’s application for release remains unresolved.
The November 4 decision is expected to clarify whether the former NPP regional chairman will be allowed to pursue his appeal from outside custody or remain in prison while the legal challenge continues.
