At the State Funeral for the late Dr. Samuel Sarpong, one of the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash, his widow, Mrs. Hannah Sarpong, delivered a heart-wrenching tribute that captured the depth of her loss and the enduring bond they shared.
Reading on her behalf, Mrs. Sarpong described her husband as not only a public servant but the heart of their home — a man of wisdom, compassion, and unshakable devotion. “You gave your all in all to the family, your people and the country,” she said.
Their 37-year marriage, she reflected, was built on faith, resilience, and companionship. “You stood by me in faith and under every difficult circumstance and challenge to walk me through the journey of life,” she recalled.
With painful detail, she recounted their final conversation on the morning of the tragedy, when Dr. Sarpong called to inform her he was traveling to Obuasi for a national assignment. “I am still looking forward to welcoming you back home. My dear husband, your departure was so sudden, and I still can’t believe it,” she said.
Her words painted a vivid image of her longing and disbelief. “Oh Sarpong Kumakuma, do you hear my call? Come back, tell me this news is not true. The day is still glooming, the sun is gone, the weather is… darkness is falling.”
Even in her grief, Mrs. Sarpong found strength in the love and legacy her husband left behind. She remembered their home as a sanctuary of prayer, unity, and dreams shared together. “I will forever cherish the moments we shared, the dreams we built and the love we shared over the years,” she said.
Her tribute closed as both a lament and a prayer: “You ran a good race, my husband. May the doors of Heaven open unto you until we meet again.”
Dr. Sarpong, who before his passing served as Deputy Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, is survived by his wife of nearly four decades, four sons, and a daughter.
