In a move to honour the legacy of late President John Evans Atta Mills, the government has announced plans to rename the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) after him. The institution, which he founded in 2012, will soon be officially known as the Professor John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences.
The announcement was made by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during the inauguration of the university’s third substantive Governing Council in Accra. The Minister described the renaming as a posthumous tribute to President Mills’ dual legacy as a statesman and academic.
Mr Iddrisu reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving infrastructure at UHAS, promising the completion of key projects and upgrades to internal roads under the GETFund and Ministry of Roads and Highways.
Professor Kodzo Gavua, newly appointed Chairman of the Governing Council and a seasoned archaeologist and academic leader, pledged to steer UHAS toward becoming a model healthcare training institution globally. He praised the late President’s vision and pledged close collaboration with government and university management to tackle pressing challenges, particularly student accommodation.
The newly formed council includes a diverse group of academics, professionals, and student representatives, and comes at a time when UHAS is consolidating its position as Ghana’s premier institution dedicated exclusively to health training and research.
