The National Identification Authority (NIA) is taking significant steps to repair strained relations with its staff as it begins processes to settle long-standing arrears dating back to January 2025.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, June 18, Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, confirmed that the NIA will soon commence payment of 20% salary arrears owed to its employees. The move, he said, is part of efforts to boost morale and ensure fairness within the Authority’s workforce.
“This is not just about arrears. It’s about honouring a commitment to our people,” Darlas said.
The 20% payment adjustment was included in the NIA’s 2025 operational budget and has now received formal clearance from both the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Ministry of Finance. According to Mr. Darlas, the Finance Ministry, led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has pledged to fast-track the release of funds by working directly with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department.
For months, NIA staff had expressed growing frustration over delayed payments, with some threatening industrial action if their concerns were not addressed. This latest development appears to be a timely response to growing internal pressure.
“We understand the frustrations of our dedicated staff,” Darlas said. “But I want to assure them that the process is now firmly underway, and they will soon receive what is due them.”
The NIA’s commitment to resolving the issue is seen as a crucial move to maintain institutional credibility and keep ongoing national identification projects on track. With staff confidence shaken in recent months, the Authority hopes this decisive step will reaffirm its pledge to worker welfare and public service excellence.
