The tragic collapse of a building at London Bridge, a busy section of the Kotokuraba enclave in Cape Coast, has reignited concerns over the prevalence of neglected and structurally unsafe buildings in urban centers across the country.
Two people have lost their lives, and three others are battling injuries following the partial collapse of the aging structure on Thursday. All five victims were inside the building when part of it suddenly gave way, triggering a frantic rescue operation.
Emergency responders swiftly pulled the survivors from the rubble and transported them to Awim Hospital for urgent care. Authorities have since cordoned off the site, with officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana National Fire Service carrying out a controlled demolition of the remaining structure to prevent further disaster.
A Systemic Problem?
Preliminary assessments suggest that the building had long been in a deteriorated and weakened state, raising questions about routine inspections and enforcement of building safety standards.
“It wasn’t even the whole building that collapsed—just a part of it. But that was enough to kill two people,” a visibly shaken resident told reporters.
While investigations into the immediate cause of the collapse are ongoing, experts say the incident exposes a deeper issue—structural decay, poor maintenance, and regulatory lapses.
“This is a wake-up call,” one urban safety analyst remarked. “How many more death traps are we walking past every day in our towns and cities?”
Authorities Face Pressure to Act
City officials and engineers have been deployed to the site, with NADMO officials calling for a full audit of old buildings in Cape Coast and other densely populated towns.
“We must not wait for more lives to be lost,” one NADMO official stated. “This calls for a city-wide operation to identify and either reinforce or demolish buildings that pose a threat.”
Community members have also expressed frustration, pointing to previous warnings about the condition of the building that allegedly went unheeded.
What Happens Next?
As the investigation unfolds, the Cape Coast Municipal Assembly is expected to issue a formal statement outlining the cause of the collapse and steps being taken to prevent similar incidents.
For many in the community, however, the damage is already done—and the tragedy has become a grim reminder of what can happen when warning signs are ignored.
