Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, has provided an update on the financial commitments of the central bank’s new headquarters project, revealing that approximately $230 million has been paid so far, with an outstanding balance of $31.8 million required to complete the construction.
Addressing Parliament, Dr. Asiama detailed the extensive financial obligations associated with the project, including significant tax payments and additional infrastructure costs beyond the core building.
Dr. Asiama disclosed that a total of $48.3 million had been paid in taxes and levies related to the construction, highlighting the broader financial implications of the project.
Beyond the main structure, separate contracts were awarded for key infrastructural components essential for the headquarters’ functionality. These include:
– **ICT systems and network infrastructure** – awarded at **$8.6 million**
– **Integrated electronic systems** – awarded at **$15.8 million**
– **Furniture and furnishings** – awarded at **$11.1 million**
The financial breakdown comes as the BoG faces increased scrutiny over the cost of the headquarters project, with concerns raised about its necessity and expenditure levels. However, Dr. Asiama maintained that the investments were crucial to ensuring a modern and fully equipped facility for the central bank’s operations.
With $31.8 million still to be paid to contractors, the BoG remains committed to completing the project while addressing concerns regarding transparency and financial prudence.
