Bernard Baidoo, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Akwatia, has outlined plans to restore the constituency’s long-standing reputation as a mining hub, promising lawful operations and renewed economic activity for residents.
Speaking after his victory in Tuesday’s by-election, the lawyer-turned-politician said Akwatia’s future is tied to harnessing its diamond-rich lands responsibly.
“Akwatia’s name has always been with regard to mining—you can’t take that away. What we need is to do it lawfully, and that’s what we’re going to work on,” Baidoo declared.
He highlighted ongoing progress at the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds (GCD) site, noting that recent steps, including the restoration of electricity, are paving the way for large-scale revival.
“Just before John Mahama came to power, this place was in darkness. We had to rely on solar panels during the 2024 collation. Today, there’s power here—not because of the by-election, but because work had already started. This is the first step towards getting GCD back on track, which can employ thousands of people,” he said.
While his election victory was fiercely contested, Baidoo maintained that the true task ahead lies in transforming campaign promises into tangible results. He stressed that his message resonated because it was grounded in focus, not distractions.
“Some comments could have swayed us, but we kept our eyes on the main target. Elections are over; now the real work begins,” he added.
Residents of Akwatia, long hopeful for a revival of the once-thriving mining town, are now looking to their new MP to deliver on his pledge of jobs and development.
