Delays in Recruiting Health Professionals Threaten Ghana’s Healthcare Delivery

Concerns are mounting over Ghana’s healthcare system as thousands of trained medical professionals remain unemployed despite growing pressure on hospitals across the country.

The Health Committee of Parliament has warned that the shortage of doctors, nurses, and pharmacists is crippling service delivery, particularly in major referral centers such as Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the Greater Accra Regional Hospital. During visits last week, the Committee observed that inadequate staffing was worsening patient care and stretching existing health workers to their limits.

Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, noted that the bottleneck lies not with the Ministry of Health, but with the Ministry of Finance, which has yet to release funds for recruitment. “We have about 1,000 doctors at home, over 48,000 nurses at home, 1,000 pharmacists at home, and many allied health scientists who are also sitting idle,” he lamented.

Healthcare experts warn that prolonged delays in absorbing these professionals into the system could trigger a public health crisis. Patients in critical need of care may face longer waiting times, while overworked staff risk burnout and errors in service delivery.

Dr. Nawaane stressed that health spending should be seen as an investment rather than a cost. “Investment in health will yield about nine or ten times. We need to spend more on health if we are to protect our people and our economy,” he said.

The standoff over financing highlights a growing debate about the government’s priorities, as many Ghanaians question why trained medical professionals are left idle while hospitals cry out for help.
