John Boadu Plots Political Comeback, Eyes NPP Chairmanship Ahead of 2026 Elections

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has signaled a major political comeback with the announcement of his intention to contest the position of National Chairman in the party’s next national leadership elections slated for 2026.

In a statement released on Saturday, November 8, Mr. Boadu said his decision followed months of consultations with party elders, executives, and grassroots members, adding that his comeback bid is driven by a desire to restore unity and direction to a party he described as being at a “critical crossroads” after its recent electoral defeat.

“Our party has drifted away from vital groups that once proudly carried the NPP flag,” he said. “We cannot afford to remain in opposition for long. There is hope for restoration, but that hope rests in leadership with proven experience and the capacity to deliver results.”

A Return to the Helm

Mr. Boadu, who served as the NPP’s chief scribe between 2016 and 2022, is remembered for his organisational role in the party’s electoral victories in 2016 and 2020. However, he lost his position in the 2022 national executive elections to Justin Kodua Frimpong, in what political observers described as a major shake-up in the party’s leadership.

His decision to return, therefore, marks a significant political re-entry, signaling a renewed contest for control within the NPP as it begins preparations for the 2028 general elections.

Vision for a New Era

Mr. Boadu said his campaign will be anchored on five key pillars — reconciliation and unity, rebuilding and rebranding, strengthening internal structures, sustainable resource mobilisation, and modernising campaign strategies through technology and data.

He noted that rebuilding public confidence in the NPP, especially among the youth, business community, clergy, academia, and the middle class, will be central to his leadership vision.

“The NPP needs to be rescued,” he said. “Power is won when the party is strong and guided by tried and tested leadership. This is not a time for experiments.”

A Veteran’s Resume

With over three decades of active political service, Mr. Boadu is widely regarded as one of the party’s most experienced organisers. He began his political journey as a polling station chairman, eventually serving as National Youth Organiser, Deputy Communications Director, and later General Secretary.

Insiders say his entry into the 2026 chairmanship race could reshape the party’s internal dynamics, setting up a potentially high-stakes contest between old-guard experience and emerging leadership voices.

As the NPP reflects on its electoral losses and recalibrates for 2028, Mr. Boadu’s bid could become a litmus test for how the party balances renewal with experience — and whether it can rebuild the unity needed to return to power.
