United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has pledged the UN’s full support to John Dramani Mahama as Ghana prepares to assume the Chairmanship of the African Union in 2027.
The assurance was given during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 39th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Discussions focused heavily on escalating security threats across the continent, particularly the worsening instability in the Sahel region.
Secretary-General Guterres commended Ghana’s leadership credentials, especially its role within the West African subregion, and expressed confidence in President Mahama’s ability to steer the continental body at a critical moment in Africa’s history.
Regional peace and democratic governance dominated the high-level talks, with special attention given to the fragile security environment in member states of the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES). President Mahama briefed the UN chief on diplomatic steps he has undertaken to mediate tensions and promote stability in the conflict-affected zone.
The UN Secretary-General emphasised the importance of coordinated international and continental action in addressing terrorism, unconstitutional changes of government and governance deficits undermining stability in parts of Africa.
In a symbolic gesture underscoring multilateral cooperation, Mr Guterres presented President Mahama with a special copy of the UN Charter printed in all six official languages of the United Nations at the close of their meeting.
The engagement signals deepening collaboration between Ghana and the United Nations as preparations begin for the country’s leadership of the African Union amid growing security and governance challenges across the continent.
