The Gbese District Court has dismissed key defence arguments in the high-profile extradition case involving Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, ruling that claims of political persecution and entrapment lack evidence.
The ruling removes significant legal hurdles, allowing the extradition process to move forward, although the accused retains a 15-day window to appeal or seek a review of the decision. The court stated that without new legal challenges, the extradition request may proceed to the next stage.
Abu Trica’s lawyer argued that the ruling is flawed and indicated plans to consider higher courts to contest the decision. “The judge said we had not proven any political connection to the offence, and Abu needs to be extradited,” the lawyer said.
The case has attracted widespread attention due to its alleged links to international online fraud targeting victims abroad. Authorities in the requesting country are seeking to prosecute Abu Trica for these offences.
The outcome of any appeal within the 15-day period will be pivotal in determining whether Abu Trica will face trial overseas. Meanwhile, the accused continues to deny wrongdoing, and his legal team is reviewing the court’s ruling to decide the next steps.
