Yammin Defends Mahama, Dismisses NPP Claims of Political Intolerance

National Organiser of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Yammin, has rejected allegations by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the Mahama administration is undermining freedom of expression and political tolerance in Ghana.

His comments follow a petition submitted by the NPP to members of the Diplomatic Corps, urging the international community to uphold democratic principles, including freedom of speech, judicial independence, due process and political tolerance in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview with Ambassador TV, Mr Yammin argued that President John Dramani Mahama has demonstrated restraint and inclusiveness in governance, despite concerns raised by some supporters of the ruling party about how opposition figures are being treated.

According to him, the President’s leadership style reflects a “Father for All” approach, which he believes has contributed to maintaining political stability and national cohesion.

Mr Yammin maintained that state institutions have a responsibility to act when individuals engage in activities that could inflame tensions or threaten public peace, insisting that such actions should not be misconstrued as attempts to suppress free speech.

He further claimed that some members of the NDC believe the current administration has shown greater tolerance toward political opponents than what they experienced under the previous NPP government.

The NDC official suggested that President Mahama’s conciliatory approach should be appreciated across the political divide, describing him as a leader committed to fairness and national unity.

His remarks add to the ongoing political debate between the two major parties over governance, democratic freedoms and the treatment of political actors since the change of government.

The exchange comes amid heightened political discourse following the NPP’s decision to raise concerns about democratic governance and civic freedoms with the diplomatic community.
