The Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has led a national wreath-laying ceremony at Banda-Ahenkro in the Bono Region to mark the 47th anniversary of the June 4 Uprising.
The event commemorated the 1979 uprising led by the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, which is widely associated with themes of probity, accountability, and social justice in Ghana’s political history.
Representing the nation, the Vice President laid a wreath as part of a series of ceremonial activities that included a minute’s silence, the hoisting of miniature Ghana flags, and the lighting of a perpetual flame in honour of national unity and the ideals of the uprising.
The commemoration, held under the theme “Strengthening State Institutions: Lessons from the June 4, 1979 Uprising,” brought together government officials, party leaders, traditional authorities, security services, farmers, youth groups, and students.
A total of seven wreaths were laid to honour various groups and individuals who contributed to Ghana’s democratic development. The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, lit the perpetual flame as part of the ceremony.
Other wreaths were laid by representatives of the security services, traditional authorities, farmers and fishers, women and youth groups, and political cadres, while a wreath was also dedicated in memory of the late President Rawlings.
The National Security Coordinator, Abdul Asumah Yeboah, represented the security services in laying a wreath, while other stakeholders reflected the diverse sectors of Ghanaian society.
The programme also featured cultural and ceremonial displays, including a parade by students from Drobo Our Lady of Providence Senior High School and Bandaman Senior High and Technical School, as well as participation from youth and women’s groups aligned with the NDC.
Organisers said the commemoration served as both a remembrance of past political events and a reminder of the need to strengthen state institutions and uphold accountability in governance.
