Young Women Encouraged to Pursue Leadership and Influence Governance

Female students and young women have been encouraged to step forward, build confidence, and take up leadership roles to help shape governance and drive sustainable development in Ghana.

The call was made during a Mentor Connect Programme organised by RISE-Ghana in partnership with the Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) Women Commission, with support from Norsaac under the Heard Everywhere and Represented Daily (HEARD) Project. The event brought together women leaders and students to discuss leadership, politics, digital inclusion, mental health, career growth, and communication skills.

Speaking at the programme, the Lead Project Officer of the HEARD Project at RISE-Ghana, Bernice Atanga, said the initiative seeks to empower vulnerable rural youth and women to participate meaningfully in governance and decision-making processes. She noted that despite their contributions to national development, many women continue to face barriers that limit their involvement in leadership.

Participants were encouraged to see leadership as a tool for service and social transformation. Upper East Regional Women Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Georgina Ayamba, urged young women to remain resilient and committed despite cultural and societal challenges that often hinder women’s participation in politics.

The programme also highlighted the growing role of digital platforms in leadership and advocacy. Digital marketing specialist Deborah Issifu encouraged participants to leverage social media responsibly to amplify their voices, engage policymakers, and build networks that support their ambitions.

Mental health emerged as another key area of discussion. Mental Health Coordinator for the Bolgatanga East District, Sophia Alahire Nsoh, stressed the need for leaders to prioritise emotional well-being, noting that leadership pressures can affect mental health and overall effectiveness.

Sharing her experiences in a male-dominated industry, Alimata Bamie of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) encouraged participants to pursue excellence without being constrained by societal stereotypes. She said determination, confidence, and continuous learning could help women thrive in any profession.

Head of Programmes at RISE-Ghana, Jaw-haratu Amadu, underscored the importance of effective communication, describing public speaking as a critical leadership skill. She urged participants to communicate confidently and use their voices to champion positive change in their communities.

The programme concluded with a call for participants to apply the lessons learned, pursue their goals with determination, and support efforts aimed at increasing women’s representation in leadership and governance across Ghana.
