The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called on Ghana’s two major political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to stay away from matters concerning Dagbon’s traditional succession following the passing of the Ya-Na, Abukari II.
The CPP said preserving the peace and stability of Dagbon required allowing traditional authorities to handle succession matters in accordance with established customs without political interference.
In a statement signed by its National Communications Director, Mr Osei Kofi Acquah, the party expressed sadness over the death of the Overlord of Dagbon and commiserated with the people of the traditional area.
The party described Ya-Na Abukari II as a respected traditional leader whose reign contributed to promoting unity and peaceful relations between the Abudu and Andani royal gates.
The CPP recalled its historical ties with Dagbon, noting that the party’s relationship with the area dates back to the 1950s when the government of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, through the Opoku-Afari Commission, played a role in resolving a succession dispute and restoring peace in the area.
The party warned that succession issues in Dagbon had historically been sensitive and urged all stakeholders, particularly political actors, to exercise restraint.
“Knowing the long-standing rivalry that arises anytime a great ‘Lion passes’ on, the CPP is calling on all national security agencies to remain vigilant and alert to ensure that they maintain peace in Dagbon,” the statement said.
It urged the NPP and NDC to respect the traditions of Dagbon and avoid actions that could undermine the credibility of the customary processes governing the selection of a new Ya-Na.
According to the CPP, Dagbon’s succession system is guided by longstanding traditions that must be respected to guarantee fairness, justice and lasting peace.
The party also announced that all CPP flags across the country would be flown at half-mast in honour of the late Ya-Na as a mark of respect and solidarity with the people of Dagbon.
The CPP extended its condolences to the royal families and residents of Dagbon, praying for strength for the bereaved and expressing confidence that the traditional area would continue to uphold peace during the transition period.
