The Ghanaian government has intensified efforts to support the detained Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, as he challenges extradition proceedings in the Netherlands.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said Ghana’s mission in The Hague is providing consular assistance to the legislator, who was arrested over alleged money-laundering and romance-scam-related offences.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, July 27, 2026, Mr Ablakwa said Ghanaian officials were coordinating with the MP’s family, legal representatives and Dutch authorities to ensure that his rights are respected throughout the legal process.
He disclosed that he personally visited the MP in The Hague on May 24, 2026, during which he also interacted with the legislator’s lawyer.
“I noted that he was doing quite well when I engaged him,” the Minister said.
Mr Ablakwa further revealed that he raised the MP’s case during a meeting with Dutch Minister for Justice and Security David van Weel on July 21.
According to him, the Dutch Minister assured Ghana that the Netherlands remains committed to due process and the protection of the MP’s rights.
Kwame Ohene Frimpong was arrested at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on May 8 over allegations linked to money laundering and romance scams.
His continued detention and absence from Parliament have triggered debate over the possible application of Article 97(1)(c) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which provides for a parliamentary seat to become vacant when an MP is absent from 15 consecutive sittings without permission.
The Foreign Affairs Minister, however, said the government would continue to provide the necessary consular support as the MP contests the extradition proceedings.
Mr Ablakwa wished the legislator well in his ongoing legal battle and said Ghana would continue monitoring the case through its diplomatic mission in the Netherlands.
