Lawyers for Angela List have demanded an immediate front-page retraction and unconditional apology from The New Republic newspaper over a publication they describe as defamatory and malicious, warning that legal action will be pursued if the demand is not met within seven days.
In a letter dated August 4, 2026, the law firm Apatu-Plange & Co PRUC, acting on behalf of Ms List, accused the newspaper of publishing defamatory statements that had caused significant damage to her reputation.
The letter specifically challenged the newspaper’s front-page headline, which described Ms List as “The Galamsey Queen of Nzema”, as well as a subheading alleging that she had used state power to seize an Australian-owned mining company and transform it into a “galamsey empire.”
According to the lawyers, the publication contained serious factual distortions and misrepresentations that were designed to associate their client with illegal mining activities.
They argued that the newspaper had departed from the standards of responsible journalism and had used press freedom to inflict unwarranted reputational harm.
“Our Client emphatically denies the allegations published by you and rejects as entirely false and malicious every defamatory imputation arising therefrom,” the letter stated.
The lawyers said Ms List had built an established reputation both in Ghana and internationally through considerable personal and professional effort, and that the publication had exposed her to public ridicule, contempt and opprobrium.
They have therefore demanded that The New Republic publish a full and unconditional retraction and apology on its front page, with equal or greater prominence than the original publication.
The law firm stressed that no other form of apology would be acceptable.
“For the avoidance of doubt, nothing short of a front-page apology of equal prominence will suffice,” the letter said.
The lawyers warned that if the newspaper failed to comply within the specified seven-day period, Ms List was prepared to seek legal redress through the courts.
The letter was addressed to the Editor of The New Republic and copied to Ms Angela List.
The development follows the newspaper’s publication of allegations concerning the ownership and operations of a mining company linked to Ms List, which has generated significant public discussion in recent days.
