The Northern Region recorded 359 new HIV cases in 2025, with health officials warning of a rising prevalence that requires urgent attention.
The Ghana AIDS Commission said the region has recorded an upward trend in HIV prevalence over the past three years, raising concerns about the spread of the virus within communities.
Mr Nuhu Musah, Northern Regional Deputy Director of the Technical Support Unit of the Ghana AIDS Commission, disclosed the figures at a public sensitisation forum.
He said the region’s HIV prevalence increased from 0.43 per cent last year to 0.48 per cent this year, describing the development as a concern that required greater public awareness and preventive action.
Mr Musah urged residents to take their health seriously and encouraged people to know their HIV status.
“These figures are coming from our homes, workplaces, communities and districts, and I am not sure we all know each other’s HIV status,” he said.
He stressed the importance of increased awareness and individual responsibility in addressing the trend, particularly as HIV infections could occur within households, workplaces and communities.
The Ghana AIDS Commission’s warning comes as health authorities continue efforts to encourage testing, early detection and measures to prevent new HIV infections in the region.
