A group of 134 former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) has petitioned the Ministry of Finance for payment of terminal benefits they say have remained outstanding since they left office in 2021.
The former MMDCEs, who served under the Nana Akufo-Addo administration, were not reappointed for a second term and left office in October 2021.
In their petition to Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, the group argued that their departure before the completion of the second term should not prevent them from receiving benefits for the period they actually served.
The petition, signed by former Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive Leo-Nelson Adzidogah, said the tenure of the MMDCEs was extended pending the nomination and approval of their successors.
According to the group, they expected their terminal benefits to be processed alongside those of MMDCEs who were reappointed for a second term.
They, however, said they were surprised when their successors received terminal benefits while they were excluded from the payments.
The former MMDCEs said the disparity was particularly concerning because those who were reappointed received benefits covering January to October 2021, a period during which both groups were in office.
They therefore appealed to the Finance Minister to review the matter and authorise payment of what they described as their outstanding entitlements.
The group characterised the omission as an oversight and expressed hope that the Ministry would take steps to resolve the matter.
The petition did not state whether the Finance Ministry had formally responded to the request.
