Eight NPP Branches and Constituencies Set to Miss National Officers’ Poll

Eight New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituencies and external branches are expected to be absent from the party’s National Officers’ Elections scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, in Kumasi, according to sources familiar with the arrangements.

The affected constituencies are Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region; Keta, Anlo, Akatsi South and South Tongu in the Volta Region; and Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai in the Western North Region.

The two external branches identified are South Africa and the United States, bringing the reported number of affected constituencies and branches to eight.

The development comes as the NPP prepares to elect its national officers at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The party has cleared 47 aspirants to contest nine national executive positions, with the elections being organised by the National Officers Elections Committee under Electoral Commission supervision.

The affected branches and constituencies form part of the party’s wider electoral structure, with constituency and external branch executives included in the electoral college for the national officers’ elections.

Constitutional changes also on the agenda

Beyond the leadership contest, delegates at the conference are expected to consider proposed amendments to the NPP’s constitution.

Among the proposals is a change to the party’s leadership structure that would make the presidential candidate the leader of the party, instead of the national chairperson.

Other proposals seek to restore the President to the National Steering Committee and expand the number of vice-chairperson positions at national, regional and constituency levels.

The proposed reforms also include making the first, second and third national vice-chairperson positions separate elective offices, as well as creating deputy regional and constituency communications officer positions.

Another proposal would allow all card-bearing members of the party to participate as delegates in presidential and parliamentary primaries.

The party is also considering the introduction of information technology officers into its regional and constituency executive structures.

The constitutional review follows a July 2026 Supreme Court ruling concerning the use of delegate-based electoral colleges in political parties’ presidential and parliamentary primaries. The Court directed political parties to establish systems allowing all registered members in good standing to vote in those candidate-selection processes within one year.

The NPP subsequently established a nine-member Constitution Amendment Committee, chaired by lawyer Frank Davies, to review proposals submitted by members and identifiable groups and streamline them for consideration by the party.

The proposed amendments will have to go through the party’s prescribed approval process before they can take effect.

New national leadership

The October 3 conference will therefore combine the election of a new national executive with deliberations on potentially significant changes to the party’s internal structures.

The nine positions being contested are National Chairperson, Vice Chairpersons, General Secretary, National Treasurer, National Organiser, National Women’s Organiser, National Youth Organiser, National Nasara Organiser and National Communications Director.

The NPP has said the exercise forms part of its organisational preparations ahead of the 2028 general election.

With the final delegates register already completed and election arrangements being finalised, attention is now turning to Kumasi for Saturday’s conference.
