The Council of State and the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment have separately scheduled meetings with teacher unions as efforts intensify to resolve the ongoing industrial action disrupting teaching and learning in schools.
The Council of State has invited the leadership of the teacher unions to a meeting on Friday, October 9, to discuss concerns at the centre of the labour dispute.
In a letter seen by Asaase News and signed by the Acting Executive Secretary of the Council, Ahmed A. Imoro, the Council said the meeting would provide an opportunity for members to be briefed on the concerns raised by the unions.
The meeting is being convened on behalf of the Chairman of the Council’s Economic and Social Development Committee, Drolor Bosso Adamtey I.
According to the letter, the discussions will focus on outstanding promotions, deprived-area allowances and the collective bargaining agreement currently under consideration between the unions and the Ministry of Education.
The engagement comes as teacher unions continue industrial action over unresolved employment-related issues, resulting in disruptions to teaching and learning in schools.
Separately, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment has also invited the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and PRETAG to a meeting on Friday.
In a letter dated October 8 and signed by the Chief Director, Hamidu Adakurugu, on behalf of the Minister, the Ministry said the meeting would review the status of interventions being undertaken to resolve the strike and address related matters.
The two separate engagements are expected to provide further avenues for discussions between the government and the teacher unions as efforts continue to bring the industrial action to an end.
