In a landmark ruling aimed at safeguarding public health, the Sunyani Circuit Court has handed a 17-year prison sentence with hard labour to Nana Agyeman Badu, an over-the-counter medicine seller, for distributing expired medical products in Chiraa, Bono Region.
Presiding over the case, Mr. Sylvester Nii Okine Ablorh also imposed a GH₵12,000 fine on Badu. If the fine is not paid, the convicted seller will serve an additional two years behind bars, further emphasising the severity of his actions.
The conviction comes in the wake of a 2022 crackdown by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), which led to the seizure of expired and potentially dangerous medical products from Badu’s shop. The case was subsequently referred to the police for prosecution, underscoring the FDA’s commitment to ensuring public safety.
Expired medicines can pose significant health risks, as chemical changes over time can reduce their effectiveness or produce harmful side effects. In light of this, the FDA has reiterated its call for the public to remain vigilant, avoid expired drugs, and report suspicious vendors to authorities.
Health experts have welcomed the ruling as a strong signal to others in the pharmaceutical supply chain, emphasising the critical importance of strict quality control in protecting lives.
